It seems like the Cambridge Winter Hawks did their homework. After losing the game at home a week ago, they defeated the Brampton Bombers 5-0 on Friday night’s game at the Powerade Center in Brampton.

Brampton tried to score in the first period, but their power plays were ineffective and it was also that counters took too long and attacks came too late. The result of this play was the first power play goal for Cambridge at minute 6:55 by Mitch Klie, assisted by Maxime Lamontagne and Anthony Guido. Only a few minutes lat

er Cambridge was able to use another power play to score by Trevor Hache in minute 15:23 with the assistance of Cody Gratton and Chris Taylor.

While in the first period Cambridge was the better team, at the beginning of the second period the Bombers were pushing really hard but couldn’t finish an attack to score a goal. The Winterhawks on the other side were able to notch three more goals in that second period. Trevor Hache scored another power play goal in minute 3:21. With the assistance of Anthony Guido, Mitch Klie scored his second goal of the game with 8:31 minutes left on the clock. And Cameron Pentsa scored the fifth goal of the game to the final result at minute 12:25.

By the end of the second period Brady Clouthier was ejected from the contest. But that wasn’t the last incident that happened that evening. The referees had a rough third period coming up with no goals, but major incidents.

The the penalty box of the Cambridge Winter Hawks was a well visited destination, but the Bombers also had to face 53 minutes of penalty time in that game. In the third period Brampton tried hard and by the middle of that period they would have deserved to be on the board but Cambridge’s goalie did a good job stopping all shots on his net. With only 4:09 minutes played in that period a major fight took place on the ice. The result was four penalties for fighting along with three misconducts for Brampton’s Matt Capicotto and Francois Côté, and Cambridge’s Maxime Lamontagne. But that wasn’t the end with five more misconducts following throughout the game for Brampton’s Brendan Lyons and Phil Caputo, as well as for Cambridge’s Lawrence Pagnan, Anthony Guido and Cameron Pentsa.

An overall interesting game with the better end for the Cambridge Winter Hawks at the Powerade Center in Brampton.

OCTOBER 10, 2012, CAMBRIDGE, ON – It’s been almost 20 years since the Ontario Hockey Association has hosted a Junior B program east of Guelph, but it may be coming back.

With the amalgamation of Junior B leagues, and a desire to compete nationally at the Junior A level, Junior B interests in and around Metro Toronto declined in the late 1980′s, creating a void within the OHA’s Sutherland Cup program, not to mention the loss of opportunity for players.

It was a program that assisted in the development of great talents such as Eric Lindros and Wayne Gretzky, and a host of NHL officials as well as great community citizens.

Now, as a result of the contraction of teams undertaken in and by the Ontario Junior Hockey League to raise the competitive level of that program both regionally and nationally, there are a number of traditional hockey communities that are now eligible for consideration to return to Sutherland Cup play.

Enter the OHA’s Junior B expansion project.

With an eye to the 2013-14 season, the OHA is gauging the interest for a fourth conference in the Junior B league in the footprint of the OHA east of Guelph with the assistance of two of its most prolific Leagues, the OJHL and the GOJHL.

The OHA expansion Committee is extending an invitation as of today to parties and communities who may have an interest in joining a great hockey program under the umbrella of the Ontario Hockey Federation as well as Hockey Canada to contact the OHA. The deadline to express that interest is November 15, 2012.

From the list of interested parties, more formal application packages will be distributed to viable candidates.

A selection committee, along with the OHA board of directors, will award new franchises in April, in time for the 2013-14 season.

Brantford sweeps the best-of-seven title series in four games and completes a remarkable season and playoff that assures the Red Sox a place in IBL history as one of the league’s greatest dynasties.
The Red Sox join Galt (1927-31) and Brantford (1959-63) as the only teams to win five playoff championships in a row. Brantford has now won six Jack and Lynne Dominico Trophies in the past seven years, losing to the Toronto Maple Leafs in seven games in the 2007 IBL Finals after winning the crown in 2006, and starting their current run in 2008.
Over a seven year period the Red Sox have now won an astounding 83 playoff games and 20 playoff series, a feat unmatched in the long history of the league. And this year’s Red Sox team turned in one of the greatest seasons of all-time.
Brantford went 29-6 in the regular season to capture the pennant and followed that up with a 12-1 record in the playoffs, including 11 consecutive wins to finish the season. That 41-7 overall mark ties the 2007 Toronto Maple Leafs for the most wins in a season combined, regular season and playoffs, with the Red Sox fashioning an overall winning percentage of .854. Brantford lost Game 2 of its opening round series to Burlington before winning three straight in that series, four straight against Kitchener and four straight over Barrie.
Chavez needed just 95 pitches to complete his gem, striking out five and walking none to finish the post-season with a 4-0 record and 1.25 ERA. He did not allow a run in his last three starts, throwing 25 scoreless innings in those starts.
The Red Sox scored single runs in the third and fifth innings and broke open the game with three more in the sixth, including Burnell’s two-run homer. Brantford added two more in the eighth and a single in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Burnell had two hits, scored twice and added two RBI while Terrell Alliman, Lee Delfino and Josh McCurdy all also had two hits to pace the Sox 11-hit attack. Tyler Patzalek and Steve Lewis also drove in runs for Brantford, who scored three times thanks to three Barrie errors as well.
Brad Bissell was the starter and loser for the Baycats. He went six innings, allowing five runs – four earned – on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Three relievers finished up for Barrie.
Robert Recuenco had two of Barrie’s three hits.

The four-time defending champion Red Sox take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with the win, with Game 2 Sunday night in Barrie.

Chavez was very sharp, scattering just five hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Brian Sikorski came on in relief and pitched a scoreless eighth before Stefan Strecker came in for the ninth.

The Red Sox veteran closer allowed four runs on four hits in just 2/3 innings before Adam Kudryk came on to get the last out and preserve the win.

Burnell, Tyler Patzalek and Scott Thorman all had two hits for the Red Sox, who opened the scoring on Thorman’s solo home run in the first inning. They added another run in the second and another in the third before Burnell’s two-run double in the sixth inning added some insurance they would need.

Barrie scored four runs in the ninth off Strecker and almost pulled off their third stunning comeback win in a row, after late inning heroics led them to wins in games five and six in their series against Guelph. Kudryk finally ended the rally and game by striking out Matt Logan with a runner on first base.

Brad Bissell pitched a complete game for the Baycats, allowing five runs – three earned – on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Ryan Spataro had four of Barrie’s 11 hits and also drove in a run. Kyle DeGrace added two hits, an RBI and scored a run for the Baycats,

The best-of-seven IBL Finals open up Thursday night when the Red Sox host game one in Brantford, with game two in the series Sunday night in Barrie.
Brantford finished first with an impressive 29-6 record in 2012 and the Red Sox will be making their seventh consecutive appearance in the IBL Finals.
The Red Sox hope to join Galt (1927-31) and Brantford (1959-63) as the only teams to win five straight championships.
AUGUST 15 – The Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) is pleased to announce that they have finalized their schedule for the upcoming 2012-13 hockey season.

The announcement comes with much anticipation and excitement from across the three conferences (Western, Midwestern and Golden Horseshoe) will all look to compete for the coveted Sutherland Cup.

Highlights to this season include the fifth annual GOJHL Showcase which will be taking place once again in St. Catharines Ontario on Saturday October 6th in the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre. The Showcase is an opportunity for GOJHL players to be scouted and communicate with scouts from the OUA, NCAA, OHL and NHL. Teams from the three conferences play one interlock game against a team from another conference with points going towards their overall regular season standings. Hosted once again by the St. Catharines Falcons of the Golden Horseshoe Conference this once a year event is a can’t miss opportunity for fans of the GOJHL.

On December 30th the Midwestern Conference will host the GOJHL Prospects and All Star Games at the Kinsmen Arena in Kitchener Ontario. The Prospects game gives scouts another opportunity to look at the best and brightest young players from across the GOJHL. The All Star game is a fantastic opportunity for fans of the GOJHL to cheer on their favourite players in Junior Hockey. This will also mark the 25th anniversary of the Frank Santarossa Scholarship Fund. Created in the memory of the late Frank Santarossa, a promising young player from the Cambridge Winter Hawks, he lost his life in a tragic car accident on his way home from the arena. In the 25 years the Scholarship Fund has raised over $70,000 which has been awarded to players from the Midwestern Conference and as recent as last season the Western and Golden Horseshoe Conferences respectively.

Mark it in your calendars Hockey Fans! The 2012 GOJHL season is about to kick off in full gear. We’re ready for some of the best hockey this province has to offer, are you?
